More about this map

What's in a name?

Our firm was initially founded as 39 DEGREES NORTH, LLC (39°N). 39°N was founded in the State of Indiana on November 15, 2004. The name was derived from the nearest latitude line closest to Bloomington, Indiana. 39°N was co-founded by three former Indiana University employees (Alex, Chris and Prem) by leveraging the GIS skills gained from the small team that developed the first and second major versions of the IndianaMap.

We started 39ºN out of a love of problem-solving and an enthusiasm for using our technological ingenuity to create and build geographic information systems. We have always been fascinated by data and infatuated with mapped information, and our excitement about location intelligence has continued to grow as our customers’ needs have evolved. We take pride in showing our customers the real value of their data and in dazzling them with the aesthetic quality of its presentation.

In 2008, Chris and Prem formed a new company on the sideline realizing that someday we would expand upon our initial geospatial offerings. Picking a name is no easy task. What we did know in 2008 is that we would always have a geospatial component to our offerings but also knew that emerging technologies would converge with our GIS backgrounds. We settled on “geoConvergence” but continued to be known as 39 DEGREES NORTH for the next 12 years.

In 2020, we were approached by Scheider Geospatial to acquire our internationally, award-winning Software as a Service (SaaS) product named “Elevate.” At the time of the acquisition, Elevate had over 125,000 registered users and saved countless trips to government offices from the public to obtain critical property record information. If you asked someone about 39 DEGREES NORTH, they would respond by saying they are the company who developed and maintained Elevate. Most people didn’t realize that outside of Elevate, we have supported various commercial, higher education institutions, and state and federal agencies with GIS and IT Support.

Since selling our Elevate platform and turning 16 years old, it is time for a facelift and we will be known as geoConvergence. It is our intention to expand our offerings into federal and state governments as well as increase our commercial partnerships. If you have known us in the past, we will always answer to 39 DEGREES NORTH. If you are new to learn about our firm, we can be conveniently found in all United States and State of Indiana databases as geoConvergence.

The Founding of 39 DEGREES NORTH (39°N)

Original 39 Degrees North Logo

39 DEGREES NORTH (39°N) was co-founded by Prem Radhakrishnan, Chris Walls and Alex Zlotin out of their homes while working fulltime jobs for the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). With no startup cash and a computer bought on a student loan, the three were determined to make 39°N their futures. 39°N was going to focus on developing customized Esri solutions with a focus on web-based technology. At that time, the technology was called ArcIMS.

The name 39 DEGREES NORTH was chosen because it was the closest latitude line to Bloomington, Indiana.

Early 2005

Because of the co-founders work for the IGS and locality, Monroe County, Indiana became 39 DEGREES NORTH’s first customer. Our company was tasked with developing a customized ArcIMS GIS viewer that focused on the dissemination of parcel data.

39 DEGREES NORTH was awarded Morgan County, Indiana’s public-facing GIS viewer. The ArcIMS viewer was a mirror of the Monroe County system and integrated assessor and auditor property databases to GIS parcel data. At this point in the company’s history, a SaaS product was in the making by combining the work completed for Monroe and Morgan Counties. 39 DEGREES NORTH hired a full-time sales manager and quickly began picking up new customers.
