Company Overview
geoConvergence is an award-winning, SBA 8(a) and HUBZone-certified GIS consulting firm specializing in implementing, integrating, and extending core Esri technology. We provide best-in-class geospatial and information technology solutions to commercial and government customers. Our projects focus on enhancing data accuracy and usability for critical applications such as facility management, planning, and emergency response.
Job Summary
geoConvergence is seeking a Senior GIS Analyst/Data Scientist to design, manage, and optimize database systems while developing robust scripting solutions for data orchestration. This role emphasizes ownership of data update processes, schema management, and contributions to research and development initiatives. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to automate client data updates, support active projects, and ensure our geospatial solutions align with industry best practices. The ideal candidate thrives in a dynamic environment, combining technical expertise in GIS and data science with a proactive approach to innovation.
Position Responsibilities
Database Design and Management
- Collaborate with cloud administrators to evaluate and select appropriate cloud products and tech stacks for new projects and products.
- Manage enterprise geodatabases and open-source databases, including PostGIS, spatial SQLite, and MongoDB; remain current on evolving features and techniques.
- Perform essential maintenance tasks such as upgrading database versions, ensuring compatibility with integrated systems, managing costs, and executing database migrations.
- Design database schemas to define data models and relationships, including schemas to support Esri Indoors, indoor network models, and floor-aware datasets, owning all geodatabase schema design and data validation processes.
- Fully document database structures, related workflows, and code execution environments for company-deployed servers focused on data pipelines.
- Oversee client data updates and automation to support organizational priorities and project timelines, with a special focus on indoor data refresh cycles and floor plan updates.
Scripting, Automation, and AI/ML
- Develop and deploy scripts to orchestrate data pipelines, including internal tools and client leave-behind solutions.
- Create automations for business logic, optimizing and improving existing code for efficiency and reliability (e.g., ETL from CAD/BIM to Indoors-ready feature classes).
- Maintain, document, and rigorously test critical business code related to data and database management.
- Design and implement AI/ML workflows to support and automate floor plan generation, including:
- Converting CAD, BIM, PDF, or image-based floor plans into structured, GIS-ready indoor datasets.
- Detecting and classifying interior features (e.g., rooms, doors, corridors, POIs) from source files or imagery.
- Assisting with topology creation and validation for indoor networks (e.g., pathways, connectivity, accessibility).
- Integrate AI/ML models into existing data pipelines (Python-based, containerized, or cloud-native) to enable repeatable and scalable floor plan and indoor mapping automation.
Indoors & Indoor Mapping
- Configure and support Esri Indoors and related indoor mapping solutions, including data models, floor-aware maps/scenes, and mobile/desktop/web experiences.
- Develop repeatable workflows to:
- Ingest and normalize indoor data from multiple sources.
- Generate and update indoor GIS layers (levels, units, zones, pathways, points of interest).
- Align indoor datasets with enterprise asset, facility, or work order management systems.
- Collaborate with clients to define requirements and best practices for indoor mapping, space management, and indoor navigation.
Research and Development
- Conduct authorized literature reviews and internal testing to explore and develop new techniques and methods with potential for productization.
- Focus R&D efforts on:
- Improved AI/ML approaches for floor plan extraction, feature recognition, and vectorization.
- Improved AI/ML approaches for modifying existing models and training new models for imagery workloads
- Enhanced methods for validating indoor datasets (QA/QC, topology checks, metrics on accuracy and completeness).
- Stay informed on industry advancements in GIS, indoor mapping, computer vision, and machine learning to incorporate best practices into solutions, enhancing deployment efficiency and system reliability.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in GIS analysis and data science, with demonstrated expertise in geospatial database management, scripting, and indoor/enterprise GIS workflows.
- Proficiency in database technologies (e.g., PostGIS, MongoDB, spatial SQLite) and scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL).
- Strong experience with automation tools, data pipelines, and cloud environments (e.g., AWS).
- Experience applying AI/ML techniques (e.g., computer vision, classification, clustering, feature extraction) to geospatial or spatially-related datasets.
- Hands-on experience with Esri technology, particularly ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and exposure to Esri Indoors or similar indoor mapping frameworks.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and translate technical concepts effectively.
Preferred:
- Experience with enterprise geodatabases and open-source alternatives, including migrations and optimization.
- Familiarity with geospatial data validation, schema design, and integrating GIS with broader data ecosystems.
- Demonstrated experience with indoor GIS/Indoors projects, including floor-aware mapping, space planning, or indoor navigation solutions.
- Proven track record in R&D, such as conducting literature reviews, building prototypes, or piloting new AI/ML-based methods for spatial or image-based workflows.
- Knowledge of performance metrics like deployment efficiency, system reliability, model accuracy, and code quality.
- Experience with containerization and CI/CD for data and AI/ML pipelines is a plus.
- Relevant certifications, including:
- Geodata Management Professional 2025
- AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
- AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate
